| More than a neighborhood,
Decatur is actually a small city of 18,000 located six
miles east of downtown Atlanta, artfully blending historic
architecture with new construction. Known for its vibrant
music scene, Decatur, Georgia owes much to its beloved
openly lesbian, Grammy-winning Indigo Girls, who seem
to have set a relaxed tone for the easy-going area, easily
accessible from Atlanta by car or MARTA (Atlanta's mass
transit system). Decatur is also home to the only openly
gay African American elected official, Commissioner Kecia
Cunningham.
Most shops, restaurants and government offices in Decatur are
within walking distance of each other as they face the
Old Courthouse on the Town Square and line the adjacent
East and West Ponce de Leon Avenues. In Decatur, Georgia, the highly respected
women's college Agnes Scott College is located here,
along with Atlanta's largest lesbian bar. |
