Atlanta Pride Committee produces the annual Pride Festival & Parade. The Festival is held each year on the last weekend in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which launched the modern LGBT rights movement. The festival typically attracts over 300,000 people. It hosts a variety of performers, crafts, community and food booths, and special guest speakers. There is also a Pride Parade through Midtown on the last day of the festival. Emory's Office of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/ and Transgender Life are an administrative office offering programs and services designed to improve the campus climate for LGBT faculty, students, and employees. Funded by the university in 1991, the office has worked for domestic partnership benefits for staff and students, helped expand the university's non-discrimination policy, and they have two annual events: the Emory Pride banquet held in March and the Emory LGBT Film Festival held in February of each year. Enlight Atlanta works to end bias and harassment in the schools grades K-12. Founded in 2001 they train educators, counselors and school staff members about issues facing gay kids; they provide gay straight alliance training; a youth leadership institute; a safe space initiative and hold several fundraisers throughout the year. Georgia Association of Physicians for Human Rights (GAPHR) is an association of physicians and medical students dedicated to the elimination of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in medicine. They provide information to health providers about medical issues facing the GLBT community; they provide support for LGBT physicians residents and med. students. Georgia Equality is the political and advocacy voice of Georgia's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender citizens and their allies. Founded in Atlanta in 1995, it has grown into a true statewide advocacy organization and is known nationally as one of the leaders among state and local LGBT advocacy groups. Georgia Equality endorses gay supportive candidates for office and advocates for domestic partnership benefits at major area employers, hate crimes law and AIDS assistance programs. PFLAG, Atlanta Chapter is a support group dedicated to helping parents who have lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered children. The group also works with GLBT people and their other family members regarding their sexual orientation, educates the public, and advocates for equality for the LGBT community. Project Open Hand provides two freshly cooked meals and nutrition services each day to people with symptomatic HIV/AIDS, homebound seniors and individuals with other critical illnesses or disabilities. The group was started in 1988 and has grown to include thousands of volunteers who have delivered over four million meals. The Center was founded in 1976 and offers a broad range of services to the LGBT community. They provide low or no cost space for LGBT groups; support groups; general information about local events and business; classes; writers' workshops; health services including an HIV/STD Testing Clinic which has evening hours; and they have a large staff of volunteers. Youth Pride works to help the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual transgendered and questioning youth through advocacy, education, outreach, support services and activities. Founded in 1995, Youth Pride now runs a center, three adult facilitated support or discussion groups, Synergy -a youth-run social support and education program, an info line, regular social events and a newsletter. Atlanta Couples Together is a social group for couples in committed same-gender couples. In operation for 20 years, they provide social and networking opportunities where monogamous couples can meet. Atlanta Prime Timers is a social and support group for older gay or bisexual men and younger men who enjoy the company of mature men. Black and White Men Together is a multi-cultural and multi-racial social and support group for men who want to help break down racial and cultural barriers. Fourth Tuesday bills itself as 'the premier networking and social organization for lesbians in the Atlanta area.' Founded in 1982, the group gets together every fourth Tuesday for a different themed event, they also hold progressive dinners, dances, and other social outings. In the Life Atlanta hosts the black lesbian/bisexual/gay/transgendered community pride event. For the past five years, the festival is held over Labor Day weekend. Sports Organizations
Atlanta Rainbow Trout is a gay friendly aquatics club for swimmers and water polo players of all skill levels. This six-year-old group holds practice time every day except Monday and Wednesdays. Frontrunners provides encouragement and support to lesbians and gay men who enjoy running or walking. Their mission is to promote healthy living and socializing through fitness. Hotlanta Softball is a member of the National Association of Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance and offers two divisions of play: a women's division for women only and an open division comprised mostly of men, but that also includes a few female players. Action Cycling Atlanta are cyclists from diverse backgrounds with common interests - physical fitness and philanthropy. Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative educates, advocates and serves in support of lesbians with cancer and their partners and family members. They provide a center in the Candler Park neighborhood where they hold support groups, a resource center, and bereavement groups. Atlanta Executive Network (AEN) is one of the largest networking organizations in the country. Founded in May 1992, the group has four goals: to enhance business contacts and friendships through networking; eliminate discrimination and promote diversity in the workplace; and foster leadership in business, government and the arts. Each meeting features thirty minutes for networking and time to hear from a nationally or locally prominent speaker. There's space on the group's website for resumes and the group holds separate luncheons each month for networking in a small environment. Atlanta Feminist Women's Chorus is one of the oldest and largest non-auditioned choruses in the United States. The chorus sings a variety of music including show tunes, women's music and classical music. They are also a member of the international gay and lesbian choral association or GALA Choruses, Inc. The Atlanta Freedom Marching Band is a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender marching band. Founded in 1993, it has grown to be one of the nation's most visible and active LGBT bands. Everyone is welcome to join the band regardless of musical ability (non-musical? baton and flag twirlers are always welcome). They march and play at local festivals -gay and straight-and on Friday evenings at 7pm at First Metropolitan Community Church of Atlanta. Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus is an auditioned chorus that provides quality performances of classical, show tunes, popular work and pieces specially commissioned for the chorus. Founded 20 years ago, they perform at three annual concerts (Holiday, Spring and Pride) and host a variety of concerts throughout the year. Practice for the group is every Thursday.
