| Midtown,
just north of downtown, covers a large area radiating
from the City's largest green space, Piedmont Park,
on its eastern edge. Piedmont Park is central to
Atlanta's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
identity. In Midtown Atlanta, it is not uncommon to see gay and lesbian
couples strolling hand-in-hand along the park's
paths, or for groups of friends to gather for a
game of Frisbee, volleyball or relaxed picnics.
What started as a "gay ghetto"
has grown into some of Atlanta's most desirable
- and pricey - property while maintaining a high
concentration of gay businesses and identity.
Currently, Midtown, Atlanta is going through another
growing spurt, as evidenced by the many building
cranes dotting the neighborhood's expanding skyline
along Peachtree Street and Piedmont Avenue. In
addition to the hub of 10th Street & Piedmont
Avenue, Midtown even boasts a "way gay"
mall and adjacent mini mall further down Piedmont
Avenue.
