Pride: Weekend loaded with high-profile parties and DJs
9/30/2011 12:00:00 AM

With the origins of Pride rooted in a fight for a right to party, there’s no more fitting way to pay homage to Stonewall than a weekend full of blockbuster dances and good times. Atlanta’s clubs and party promoters recognize Pride weekend as the most vibrant of the year, and they’ve gone all out in their attempts to create memorable experiences for revelers.
“It would be a catastrophe for Atlanta not to have huge DJs coming in for Pride,” said promoter Chris Coleman, who has a cadre of heavy-hitting international DJs slated for his parties. “I think Atlanta’s got a lot in store for Pride, and a lot of us are stepping up by bringing the big-name DJs.”
Coleman helps kick-off Atlanta Pride’s festive weekend with a cocktail set at Whiskey Park in the W Midtown on Oct. 6. The “Stride into Pride” party takes place following Atlanta Pride’s commitment ceremony, and features the sounds of DJ Scorpio and $5 drink specials all night.
“We also have a couple surprise guests coming through, so it should really be a good time,” Coleman said.
Also on Thursday night, country music fans have a chance to kick their heels up for Pride with 3-Legged Cowboy Night at the Heretic, while Bellissima caters to the ladies with its “Juice Box Jam” party.
The parties really begin to rev up on Friday, Oct. 7, with the official Pride kick-off party at the Georgia Aquarium, followed by the official after-party at Jungle. The “Dive into Pride” affair at Jungle features DC-based DJ Ed Bailey, who has cultivated a loyal Atlanta following with his Studio 54 and Madonna-rama parties at Jungle.
“That was a great event last year and I think it will be an even better event this year,” Atlanta Pride Executive Director James Sheffield said of the party at Jungle.
“There was a line around the block last year, so if folks are able to get their tickets in advance they should do that. We’re really happy to have the partnerships that we do, and for any of these parties that we have, you just cannot count on there being tickets at the door.”
Lesbians are in store for a full helping of satisfaction at My Sisters’ Room’s “Taste the Rainbow” party Oct. 7, which includes performances by drag bigwigs Nicole Paige Brooks, Owen McCord, Shaun Daniels and Blake Valentine, and MC Chase Daniels and DJ Annalyze taking turns on the turntables.
The ladies also have the opportunity to party in “Heaven” on Friday night, as one of the signature lesbian parties of Pride weekend takes over the Park Tavern at Piedmont Park. The Heaven party, produced by SWA-RE and Bellissima, strives to create a whimsical night for the more than 1,000 ladies that attend each year. This year features an all-star line-up of DJs including DJ Duck, DJ Vickie Powell and DJ Dimples.
In addition to a night of heart-thumbing beats, the Heaven party also showcases burlesque performances, go-go dancers, an art exhibit by Teressa Peruzzi and Victoria Moore, and a fashion show by 100% Cool Fashion.
Hot weekend parties
Another of the largest lesbian parties of the year takes place Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Peach Pride mega dance party hosted by Curve Magazine and Pandora Events. Held at the Loft at Centerstage in Midtown, the Peach Pride affair has attracted thousands of women each of the past few years.
“The women’s scene in Atlanta is a great scene that definitely comes out and parties,” said Yesi Olivera-Leon of Pandora Events.
“It’s grown over the years, it’s become more diverse and we get women from all different types of cultures so it’s a good mix,” said Olivera-Leon, who notes that a drag king contest will take place at The Loft prior to the actual party to give the event more Atlanta flavor.
“We just did a lot of research on drag kings, and we know that Atlanta is very, very popular when it comes to the drag king scene,” she said. “We’re trying to get as many local drag kings to sign-up, and we’re going to be giving away $1,000 in cash and prizes.”
Pandora Events, the group behind lesbian mega circuit parties such as Shedonism Vegas and the Aqua Girls and Women’s White Party in Miami, was drawn to Atlanta from local fans and vendors clamoring for more options for ladies during Pride, Olivera-Leon says.
“Pride does an amazing job of getting all of the women to come out during the day with their families, with their kids, with their brothers and sisters where they all hang out for the day and listen to concerts, but women didn’t really have big events to go to at night,” she says. “I think they were ready for something more, and now they have these big events like Heaven and our party.”
The boys have plenty of Saturday nightlife options as well, from an evening dance party hosted by Chris Coleman at the new Renaissance Hotel in Midtown, to DJ Pat Scott and the Southern Bears Club partying at the Eagle, to DJ Lydia Prim spinning at the Heretic.
The Marquee draw on Saturday night is expected to be at Jungle, where legendary DJ Tony Moran celebrates Pride. Moran’s appearance at Jungle ignites two nights of acclaimed spinners providing the soundtrack for Atlanta Pride.
On Sunday, DJ Twisted Dee works the crowd at the Heretic, while the official Pride closing party at Club Opera is graced by the presence of the superstar DJ duo Chus & Ceballos. The closing party is followed by an after-hours set at Opera, where DJ Hector Fonseca keeps the party going until 7 a.m.
“With these huge DJs coming in from three different continents, I think it just sets a higher bar for Atlanta,” says Coleman, who hosts the parties at Opera. “I’m getting people even from the straight scene wanting to come in and be apart of what is going to be one of the most amazing nights Atlanta has ever seen.”

Starlight Cabaret ends Pride on ‘uplifting’ note
9/30/2011 12:00:00 AM

As a semi-retired member of the drag troupe the Armorettes, Tony Kearney doesn’t don his heels and wigs as frequently as he used to. However, there’s a magic to the Starlight Cabaret that closes Atlanta Pride that makes him rush to his closet to unleash his drag alter ego, Wild Cherry Sucret.
“It’s just, when you look out and there’s a sea of people, and they’re every race, and color, and age,” Kearney said of the Starlight Cabaret, which takes place at 7:05 p.m. on the Coca-Cola stage Oct. 9. “There’s a lot of different kids that come to it who never get to see Atlanta’s drag shows.
“Atlanta used to be like the hub of drag in the country, and it’s kind of different now without the big bars and the big stages,” Kearney added. “It’s an opportunity for a lot of people to shine, and a lot of people come out who normally wouldn’t see them perform.”

About 15 of Atlanta’s biggest drag queens have signed on to perform at this year’s Starlight Cabaret, which will also include a number by Jujubee, one of the standout queens from season two of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
“It’s great because it allows us to sprinkle in a little national headline talent into the cabaret,” said James Sheffield, executive director of the Atlanta Pride Committee. “Our local talent is so amazing that it’s hard to imagine how you could even build on that, but it’s nice to have this opportunity to have Jujubee, as well.”
Atlanta Pride fortuitously stumbled upon Jujubee, who was recruited by the Georgia Aquarium to perform at the official Pride kick-off party Oct. 7.
“The folks at the Georgia Aquarium actually took care of getting her here, and they’re the ones that made the connection,” Sheffield said. “And we figured that if we were going to have her here for the aquarium party, we would love to have her as part of the Starlight Cabaret.”
As the closing showcase for Pride, the Starlight Cabaret has generated a collaborative spirit among Atlanta’s drag queens, with several teaming up each year to produce elaborate ensemble pieces. This year’s show will include a special number featuring Ashley Kruiz that traces the gay rights movement over the past 40 years.
“It’s just a really fun show and the last few years I think it’s just gotten better with people working together and doing a lot of different group numbers and things that you normally wouldn’t see if you went to a bar,” Kearney said. “People just kind of bring it a little more for the cabaret, and it’s always a great, uplifting night.”

R&B star Brandy to perform at Atlanta Black Gay Pride
8/22/2011 1:19:44 PM

It's official — R&B star, actress, producer and "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Brandy will headline Traxx Atlanta and Traxx Girls Black Gay Pride celebration with live performances on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Last week, Phillip Boone of Traxx Atlanta could only confirm Traxx was in talks with a nationally recognized artist and that the performer "used to have her own TV show and she sings and she was on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ recently."
Traxx Atlanta confirmed Brandy will be performing at Black Gay Pride in a press release today. She will be performing for Traxx Girls at the Georgia Freight Depot and for Traxx Atlanta at the Traxx Club at 1287 Columbia Drive.
Brandy competed in season 11 of "Dancing with the Stars," had her own TV show, "Moesha," from 1995-2000 on UPN and also recorded her debut album as a teenager, earning her a Grammy nomination in 1996 for the song, "Baby." In 1999, she won the Grammy for the song "The Boy Is Mine."
Brandy just signed a recording deal with RCA Records, according to a blog posted today on the L.A. Times website. She joins the ranks with other RCA artists including Britney Spears, R. Kelly, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake.
Brandy has appeared at other Gay Pride feasts around the country. In 2005, she talked to ChicagoPride.com about her gay fan base as well as gay marriage.
CP: Now, let’s talk about your fans, specifically your gay fan base. Does it seem to you that you have a lot of gay fans?
Brandy: Yes, it does. It’s funny, recently I was in a parking lot, and one of my gay fans came to the car and knocked on the window. He said, “Oh my God, Brandy, you’re so beautiful, I want to be straight!” It was the funniest thing. I knew that he was just playing with me, but that was his way of saying I was beautiful to him, and I was really flattered by that.
CP: A lot of gay men seem to like glamorous, larger-than-life singers. Do you have an idea why?
Brandy: I do get that sense, I don’t know why that is. I mean, I like glamorous divas too!
CP: Do you have an opinion about gay marriage?
Brandy: I just think that love is free, that’s what I think. I feel like if people want to be committed to each other, I don’t think there should be any problem with that. I don’t judge people on what they do. I just know that love is free, and anybody can feel it, whether it be with someone of the same sex or the opposite sex.
CP: I imagine, that being in show business since you were young, you have been around gay people for a long time. Do you have a lot of gay friends?
Brandy: I do. And I love them—it’s no different. I don’t even like to categorize anybody, saying they’re this way or that. If I have a great chemistry with someone, that’s what’s important.
Also, Wassup N ATL has listed on its website that Mary J. Blige will perform live on Sunday, Sept. 4, at its Grown & Sexy Sundays at Park Tavern.

The selection process began in May, when we asked you, our readers, to nominate your favorites for dozens of awards in the categories of Community, People, Places, Eats, Shopping, Arts & Entertainment and Nightlife.
The top three finalists in each category made it through to the next round of voting. For the month of June, a multiple-choice ballot asked you to pick among the finalists for who really represents the finest in LGBT Georgia.
Thanks to everyone who voted, and congratulations to all of the worthy winners and runners up.
NIGHTLIFE
Best Overall Bar
Best Niche Bar
Best Neighborhood Bar
Best Best Place to Meet Men
Best Karaoke
Mary’s
Hey, Mary’s! People like you, they really like you! This self-proclaimed gay dive bar practically swept every category it was nominated in and for good reason — it’s been voted tops by the Logo channel and Out magazine and now by GA Voice readers.
Tucked into the busy corner of the ultra hip East Atlanta Village, Mary’s (www.marysatlanta) is the favorite for men who enjoy cruising men as they squeeze next to each other to reach the bar. Many Mary’s men (and women) are firm believers in the hanky code so there’s plenty to know up front when talking to the guy upstairs at the Boozy Cougar. With popular parties ranging from the Boys of Summer swimsuit competition to Bastille Day where gender bending revolutionaries show up to celebrate, Mary’s is also still tops for karaoke — aka Mary-oke — where inner divas sing their hearts out.
Best Bar Overall: Amsterdam (www.amsterdamatlanta.com) placed second while The New LeBuzz (www.thenewlebuzz.com) placed third.
Best Niche Bar: Atlanta Eagle came in second (www.atlantaeagle.com) and Woofs (www.woofsatlanta.com) placed third.
Best Neighborhood Bar: Burkhart’s Pub placed second (www.burkharts.com) and Friends on Ponce (www.friendsonponce-atl.com) placed third.
Best Place to Meet Men: Second place finisher was Blake’s on the Park (www.blakesontheparkatlanta.com). Burkhart’s Pub placed third.
Best Karaoke: In the Karaoke category, Burkhart’s Pub placed second with Gilberts Café (www.gilbertscafe.com) taking third.
Best Place to Meet Women
Bellissima
Bellissima (www.facebook.com/bellissima.atlanta) attracts the most beautiful women in Atlanta to its Sapphic and spacious venue on Amsterdam Walk by holding live concerts, fun theme parties and DJs playing the beats that make you want to get close on the dance floor. Don’t be shy. Go up to the woman you spotted at the pool table and buy her a drink. This is the place to do just that, and your guy friends are always welcome too. My Sister’s Room (www.mysistersroom.com) placed second and, lo and behold, Mary’s (www.marysatlanta) finished third.
Best Dance Floor
Atlanta Eagle
There’s not a better place to get hot and sweaty than on the dance floor at the Atlanta Eagle (www.atlantaeagle.com). With strobe lights and the beats of house DJ Pat Scott, men like to shed their shirts and show off their best assets as they grind shoulder to shoulder with other hot guys at one of the city’s oldest gay bars. Jungle (www.jungleclubatlanta.com) placed second and the Heretic (www.hereticatlanta.com) placed third.
Best Bartender
Bernadette Patterson
Bernadette Patterson at Mary’s is Atlanta’s Best Bartender, according to our readers. With a no-frills attitude and impressive tattoo sleeves, Patterson is more than just “one of the guys” — she is part of the family and can serve a cold PBR as quick as she can toss out an unruly customer. Cheers, grrl. Have the guys buy you a round. Placing second was Richard Marshall from Jungle (www.jungleclubatlanta.com) and in third place is Cherie Oliver from The New LeBuzz (www.thenewlebuzz.com).
Best Drag Show
The Armorettes
The Armorettes (look them up on Facebook!), the camp drag queens of the South, take home the title of best Drag Show not only for their hilarious and entertaining numbers but also for their dedication to raising nearly $2 million for HIV and AIDS agencies since the troupe was born some 30 years ago. Dragnique at Jungle (www.jungleclubatlanta.com) placed second and the Court of Kings at The New LeBuzz (www.thenewlebuzz.com) finished third.
Best OTP Bar
The New LeBuzz
The New LeBuzz (www.thenewlebuzz.com) just moved to a new 4,000 square-foot space. The club hosted Marietta’s first Gay Pride last year, and will host the suburb’s second gay pride at the end of July. With a Ladies Night, its Divas Cabaret and soon-to-come Latin Night, this OTP bar puts the gay in bedroom community. Club One (www.clubone-online.com) in Savannah placed second and Club Argos (look it up on Facebook!) in Augusta placed third.
Best Theme Night
The Manshaft
If you are looking for a quarterly men’s party that offers up the Military “Private” Edition or a Lumberjack Edition with hard rocking beats from DJ Diablo Rojo, The Manshaft (www.facebook.com/groups/themanshaft) is the place to be. Dubbed a “Hot Sticky Party for Men,” the theme night often features vintage “men’s films” and a “rough and tumble crowd” that loves leather men, bears, otters and those with facial hair. Grrr. “Glee” Night at Amsterdam (www.amsterdamatlanta.com) placed second and Showtunes at Oscar’s (www.oscarsatlanta.com) placed third.
